A man who admitted to stalking a Baltimore girl with a knife and rope from his SUV received a one-year sentence Tuesday.
Bobby Ray Stanbery, 35, of Suitland, pleaded guilty Tuesday to the second-degree assault of a 14-year-old Baltimore girl in August. Baltimore City Circuit Judge Timothy Doory sentenced Stanbery to one year in jail followed by three years of probation.
He must stay away from the victim, her family and her neighborhood and may have no unsupervised interaction with children, according to Doory?s order.
The girl told police she was walking down the 700 block of Woodbourne Avenue in Baltimore in the afternoon when a gold vehicle pulled up beside her. From inside the vehicle, a man repeatedly tried to persuade the girl to take a ride.
“He kept trying to make me get in the car with him,” the girl told police.
Fearing for her safety, the teen ran away ? but not before writing down the car?s license plate number.
Using that information, police quickly stopped a 2003 gold Kia Sedona, driven by Stanbery. Inside the vehicle, an officer found a knife, rope and three pornographic movies, police said.
The rear seats of the vehicle had been removed.
Stanbery was charged with attempted kidnapping, stalking and second-degree assault. The kidnapping and stalking counts were dropped as part of a plea deal.
“Stanbery has a profound propensity to commit violent crime and has engaged [the victim] on two separate occasions,” Police Officer Raul Alvarez wrote in his report. “If released, Stanbery may attempt further contact with [the victim] or other victims.”
In 2000, Baltimore County prosecutors dropped two first-degree rape cases against Stanbery because the allegedvictims in those Towson cases never appeared at trial.
