The D.C. Department of Health Care Finance has fired its chief operating officer after city officials determined she had tried to steer a major city contract to a specific company.
Jennifer Campbell was fired Monday, the Washington City Paper reported.
The allegations against Campbell center on her work to develop the District’s infrastructure to implement President Obama’s health care reform package.
Under the Affordable Care Act, the District will develop a health insurance exchange, which will allow residents to consider multiple coverage options on one website.
City officials are reviewing bids to build the website, which is where Campbell allegedly went astray.
The City Paper, citing internal emails from Department of Health Care Finance Director Wayne Turnage, reported that Campbell tried to press CGI, an international technology company, to join with a company controlled by Darryl Wiggins, a close advisor to Ward 4 Councilwoman Muriel Bowser.
Wiggins denied any wrongdoing, and Campbell similarly told the Washington Post that she had done nothing improper.
Turnage fired Campbell, though, and has requested an investigation by the District’s inspector general.
