President Barack Obama’s last-minute campaign stop in Charlottesville for U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello on Oct. 29 cost local officials $39,000 or more, The Daily Progress reports.
Overtime pay for police and firefighters accounted for most of the cost, according to Charlottesville and Albemarle County officials.
A Perriello spokeswoman said that the campaign would pay back the city and county.
The event drew about 12,000 to the Charlottesville Pavilion, but Perriello still lost his bid for a second term in Virginia’s 5th Congressional District to state Sen. Robert Hurt on Nov. 2.
