Universal basic income 2022: Deadline for Evanston residents to apply for $500 monthly payments today

City residents from Evanston, Illinois, hoping to receive $500 monthly payments must apply today.

The $500-a-month pilot program will begin after today’s deadline and will last for a year, the Washington Examiner previously reported.

An eligible applicant must be a resident of Evanston aged 18-24 years old, over 62 years old, or an “undocumented community member,” according to the city’s website. Applicants must live in a household that makes below or at 250% of the poverty line, which equates to $33,975 for a one-person household and $45,775 for a two-person household.

Of those eligible, 150 people will be selected through a random lottery selection process. They will receive a call in September notifying them if they are chosen.

Among the sources providing funding for the program is Northwestern University, which contributed $400,000. Most of the funds come from the 2021 American Rescue Plan, amounting to $700,000.

The funding is contributing to a larger study the university is conducting to analyze the effect of guaranteed income, according to a release from Northwestern University. The study is run by Jonathan Guryan, a professor in the School of Education and Social Policy, and his team of graduate students.

“This exciting partnership will allow us to put cash in the hands of residents who need it most — and it puts Evanston where it belongs, at the forefront of innovation in progressive policy,” Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss said in a statement.
