The top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee called for a hearing on “cancel culture sweeping America” on Monday.
Rep. Jim Jordan, an Ohio Republican and ranking member on the Judiciary panel, sent a letter to Chairman Jerry Nadler, calling for an examination of cancel culture to top the agenda when the committee holds its first hearing this year.
“There is no better issue on which Republicans and Democrats can work together to address in our first full committee hearing than to address the scourge of cancel culture in the United States,” Jordan wrote to Nadler.
Jordan cited a number of examples of social media companies and major news outlets silencing conservative voices, including the move by Twitter and Facebook to suspend former President Donald Trump.
“Most recently, two Democratic members of Congress wrote to twelve cable companies demanding that they not broadcast certain news networks,” Jordan said, referring to a call to cable companies by Reps. Anna Eshoo and Jerry McNerney, both of California, to ban Fox News, Newsmax, and other outlets.
Jordan called cancel culture “a dangerous phenomenon” that curtails the first amendment and specifically free speech.
Nadler, of New York, has not responded to a request for comment on Jordan’s letter.
