Baltimore resident Sharon Nixon is founder and chief executive officer of the city’s first-ever Fashion Week, which kicks off Monday. Nixon has organized several runway events featuring local designers plus workshops on photography, hair, makeup and modeling. Is Charm City the next Milan? Nixon thinks so.
People don’t think of Baltimore as a fashion hub. Why host an event like this, here? I want people outside of Baltimore City and Maryland to know Baltimore does have fashion. We have more than “The Wire” and “Homicide.” You need to come see it! Also, I want all these designers to work for phat design houses in New York or Paris. They are great at what they do. They just need the exposure.
Does Baltimore have a style? I think it does. Baltimore’s style is more of a whatever you want it to be. Whatever you put on, no one should really critique it. Everyone has their own sense of fashion.
Who is the best dressed in Baltimore? State Sen. Catherine Pugh — her fashion is a beast. Oh my goodness. The few times I’ve seen her in public appearances, there’s never a wrinkle. Nothing out of place. She’s just fabulous.
Speaking of Senator Pugh, she has proposed a high school for fashion. Does Baltimore need one? Oh my God, oh my God, I was so excited when I heard about this. We have three high school designers placing in Fashion Week this year. They all came from Baltimore City public schools. Right now, the only place for fashion where it really counts is the School for the Arts. So, yes!
