McConnell warns socialism ‘pervasive’ among Democrats

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said Monday at a campaign event in Owensboro, Ky., that socialism is “pervasive” among his Democratic colleagues, urging supporters to support the Republican ticket down the ballot in 2020.

“I don’t want you to think this is a couple of nutcases running around the fringe,” McConnell said to a crowd of local business leaders as he kicked off his own 2020 reelection campaign. The Senate majority leader was joined by Rep. Brett Guthrie, R-Ky., at the event.

McConnell said that if he were reelected and the Republicans maintained their majority in the Senate, he would deploy every tool necessary to block Democrats’ attempt to pass progressive legislation.

“Think of me as the Grim Reaper. None of that is going to pass,” McConnell said

McConnell, who announced his reelection campaign last week, has enjoyed broad support from his caucus in the Senate. Democrats have targeted McConnell every six years since he beat a Democratic incumbent in 1984, but they have always fallen short.
