N.J. bar owner: ‘I did what every American would have done’

The Elizabeth, N.J, bar owner who found bombing suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami on his doorstep Monday said any American, no matter their religious background, would have turned the suspect in.

“I did what I think every American would have done. My neighbor would have done the same thing. Any Jewish, Christian, Sikh, Muslim, anybody would have done the same thing,” Harinder Bains said Tuesday in a CNN interview.

Bains said he found Rahami sleeping in the doorway of his bar early Monday morning. After seeing the man’s face on the news, he called the police. The suspect accused of the bombing in New Jersey and New York City is a 28-year-old immigrant from Afghanistan.

Bains identified himself as a Sikh, and said his religion obliges him to “stand up against atrocities, any type of persecutions.”

“I did what every American would have done. And we will be more stronger like this if we do everything together, you know?”
