House Democrats subpoena Mike Pompeo over Trump-Ukraine phone call

House Democrats have subpoenaed Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for documents related to allegations that President Trump set up a quid pro quo deal with the president of Ukraine to investigate 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden.

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Rep. Eliot Engel, House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Adam Schiff, and House Oversight Chairman Rep. Elijah Cummings sent a letter to the State Department on Friday notifying Pompeo of the subpoena.

The Democratic chairmen also announced depositions with a number of State Department officials: former Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, Special Representative for Ukraine Kurt Volker, Deputy Assistant Secretary George Kent, Counselor T. Ulrich Brechbuhl, and Ambassador to the European Union Gordon Sondland.

“The committees are investigating the extent to which President Trump jeopardized national security by pressing Ukraine to interfere with our 2020 election and by withholding security assistance provided by Congress to help Ukraine counter Russian aggression,” the letter says.

Trump has denied allegations that he pressured Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Biden in exchange for aid. Trump released the transcript of a July 25 phone call with Zelensky that a whistleblower alleged contained the quid pro quo deal in an intelligence community complaint.

The Democratic chairmen want to investigate a number of issues identified in the complaint, but they have focused on Trump personal attorney Rudy Giuliani’s role in the Ukraine affair.
