Pence: Keep donating, even if ‘you’re not in the pews’ on Sunday

Vice President Mike Pence on Saturday told churchgoers to donate, even if “you’re not in the pews” on Sunday.

“It’s still a good idea to, if you can, to go ahead and make that donation, because all the ministries are continuing to play a vital role in our communities,” Pence said during a Saturday press conference at the White House.

Shutdowns due to the coronavirus have canceled many in-person church services through Easter. As nonprofit organizations, many churches rely on the donations of their members, often collected at services, to maintain their operations.

To make up for the loss of services, many churches have begun streaming their activities online. Leaders have encouraged people to unite through prayer, even during periods of self-isolation. President Trump named last Sunday a national day of prayer.

Pope Francis on Thursday also called for Catholics worldwide to join him in praying the rosary.
