President Trump saluted the 73 years former President George H.W. Bush and first lady Barbara Bush were married, saying Wednesday he’ll “never beat that record.”
“Melania and I send our prayers to Barbara’s husband of 73 years — I’ll never beat that record — President George H.W. Bush,” Trump said during a press conference with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Wednesday.
Barbara Bush died Tuesday at 92 after battling chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and congestive heart failure.
The president praised Barbara Bush’s legacy as a “titan in American life” and honored her work promoting literacy and advocating for the American family.
“Her presence and character were engraved into America’s identity,” Trump said. “Her strength and toughness really embodied the spirit of our country, and her warmth and devotion earned the admiration of an entire nation and indeed the entire world.”
The president also praised Barbara Bush’s patriotism and her devotion to her faith.
“Our hearts are saddened by her passing, but our spirits are lifted by the memories of her goodness and her grace. She was a good person,” he said.
