Heaven knows he tried: Mitt Romney channels Ted Lasso for Halloween

Sens. Mitt Romney and Kyrsten Sinema teamed up for a Ted Lasso Halloween moment on Thursday, with the Utah Republican dressing up as the relentlessly optimistic soccer coach and the Arizona Democrat seemingly channeling her inner Rebecca Welton.

The Arizona Democrat’s character choice appeared somewhat apt on a critical day for the Democrats’ agenda.

In the Apple+ dramedy, Ted Lasso is a football coach with a heart of gold hired by Rebecca Welton, the new owner of English soccer team AFC Richmond, in her deliberate attempt to tank the team to get revenge on her ex-husband, the team’s previous owner. But Lasso eventually starts to win Welton over, in part by bringing her sweet treats every day.

Romney and Sinema re-created “biscuits with the boss” for photos that he posted on Twitter.

‘I NEED YOU TO HELP ME’: BIDEN BEGS DEMOCRATS TO BACK SHRUNKEN SPENDING MEASURE

The costume choices also play to Romney and Sinema’s political personas.

Sinema is a key Democratic holdout on the large Build Back Better spending bill that Democrats are trying to pass through a process that requires no Republican support. But in the evenly divided Senate, they need Sinema’s support — and the once-progressive lawmaker has frustrated Democrats by not being publicly vocal or clear on why she opposes certain measures like corporate tax increases.

“Given what’s going on in the Senate right now, she’s appropriately called the boss,” Romney told HuffPost on Thursday. He did not go to votes in the Senate wearing the Ted Lasso costume.

President Joe Biden traveled to Capitol Hill to speak with House Democrats on Thursday to sell a $1.75 trillion spending bill framework (down from $3.5 trillion due in part to objections from Sinema) as being enough for progressives to vote for a separate $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill. House Progressives say they will not vote for the infrastructure bill without the full text of the $1.75 trillion proposal and a commitment that Sinema and West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin will vote for it.

Sinema said in a statement Thursday that “we have made significant progress on the proposed budget reconciliation package” but stopped short of pledging to vote for the bill.

Sinema dressing up as a character who deliberately tries to tank her own team, particularly on a day when Biden is personally lobbying Democrats on his agenda, rattled some commentators.

“Gross,” columnist Wajahat Ali remarked.

“I see bipartisan contempt for working-class Americans,” remarked Democratic Texas congressional candidate Russell Foster.

Romney indulged in other Ted Lasso snapshots without Sinema.

Thursday’s Ted Lasso costume is just the latest Romney Halloween celebration this week. At a Wednesday Capitol Dog Costume Contest, Romney was pictured with a dog dressed as “Pierre Doglecto,” a play on the senator’s anonymous Twitter account Pierre Delecto that was exposed in 2019.
