The anti-capitalism protests officially kicked off at noon Thursday in the District at Pennsylvania Avenue’s Freedom Plaza. The afternoon started off with speeches from organizers of the movement and civil and human rights leaders. More than 1,000 people have gathered here so far and the crowd is expected to fan out into the city later for demonstrations.
As far as protests go, this one is highly organized with port-a-pottys and hand cleansing stations lined up on the 14th Street side of the plaza. Booths are set up on tjhe plaza’s north side assisting visitors with things like legal advice, food and there’s even one for the media. A stage is set up on the 13th Street side of the plaza.
So far the demonstration has remained energized but peaceful. Police presence appears to be minimal.
