Tom Cruise’s return to his role as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick has earned an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.
The film was lauded by some as a rebut of Hollywood wokeness and an embrace of patriotism. One reviewer called the movie “a refreshing and welcome relief from the ideological propaganda that permeates modern Hollywood.”

The sequel was the top-grossing domestic release of 2022, raking in $718,318,561.
Top Gun: Maverick will face off against several other films, including James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water, which just surpassed $2 billion at the international box office, becoming the sixth bestselling movie of all time.
After the nominations were revealed, social media users wondered whether the awards show could “redeem themselves” after awarding Top Gun: Maverick a nomination.
“Top Gun getting an Oscar nomination just proves that people HATE woke culture…. Bring back PRO-AMERICAN movies,” wrote conservative commentator Graham Allen.
