P.G. officials auditing Show Place Arena expenses

More than $1 million in expenses at Show Place Arena are being scrutizined by Prince George’s County auditors after officials were tipped off to wasteful spending by the arena’s manager.

The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, the agency charged with overseeing the arena, has been investigating payments made by manager William Chambers that auditors say benefited Chambers and his wife, according to a draft audit obtained by the Washington Post.

More than $200,000 in expenditures signed off by Chambers is under scrutiny. Chambers retired during the summer, once the audit was underway, according to the Post.

Chambers told the Post the payments were legitimate business expenses made in the interest of the Upper Marlboro arena.
