WHO: Marin County, Calif.
WHAT: Because of the post-Sept. 11 terrorist threat, the county received more than $100,000 to protect its water treatment system from a terrorist attack. The Sacramento Bee reports that four years later, the equipment purchased with $67,000 of the money was still in its original packaging, unused. The rest of the money went to an alarm system that didn’t work.
WHY IT’S AN OUTRAGE: After all the rhetoric after 9/11 about how local first responders needed more money, this total waste of funds is not amusing.
