Newsmax CEO Chris Ruddy said Monday that President Trump is looking into firing special counsel Robert Mueller from his job of overseeing the federal investigation into Russia’s role in last year’s election.
“I think he’s considering perhaps terminating the special counsel … I think he’s weighing that option,” Ruddy told “PBS Newshour” host Judy Woodruff.
Ruddy was seen walking out of the White House on Monday, but it’s not clear if he met with Trump.
The conservative media head said he did not believe Trump, whom he calls a friend, should terminate Mueller.
“I personally think it would be a very significant mistake,” Ruddy said, adding he does not believe the probe is justified. Many have already speculated in the press that while Trump could legally get rid of Mueller, doing so would likely open him up to criticism from both Democrats and Republicans.
Earlier Monday, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich called into question Mueller’s ability to be objective in his probe of potential ties between Trump’s campaign associates and Russian officials.
