Alec Baldwin: ‘Crazy shtick’ playing Trump on ‘SNL’ is ‘not a lot of fun’

Alec Baldwin conceded there isn’t much enjoyment in his “crazy shtick” playing President Trump on “Saturday Night Live.”

He echoed past criticism of his Emmy-winning role during an interview with Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., on the latest episode of his Here’s The Thing” podcast for WNYC.

“I did the Trump thing and all the crazy shtick that they had me do, which has been not a lot of fun, I must say, having to channel Trump,” the actor said.

His comment is similar to another one he made a couple months after the election. “Playing him is not a lot of fun,” he said to Extra in February. “He’s tense, he’s angry, he’s pissed off, and that’s not fun to play.”

Despite his issues with the role, Baldwin returned for the premiere of the 43rd season of “SNL” on Saturday to reprise his comical yet unflattering take on Trump.

He also asked Sanders whether his portrayal of Trump has made the president a “a little too cuddly” or a “little too funny,” distracting people from the serious real-world consequences of Trump’s actions.

“I think we need to focus on – on Trump – is what he is doing,” Sanders said, before going into the healthcare debate.

The two did laugh at comedian Larry David’s portrayal of Sanders on “SNL” during the 2016 campaign.

Asked what he thought about David’s impersonation, Sanders said, “He did it better than me.”

Baldwin said that one of David’s lines about underwear was probably one of his favorites.
