A reporter who complained Thursday that is was “offensive” for Donald Trump to refer to Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., as Pocahontas accomplished the exact opposite of getting the GOP nominee to stop.
Instead, Trump rolled his eyes, pursed his lips and again jokingly referred to the Massachusetts senator as the famous daughter of Chief Powhatan.
The reporter who tried to scold Trump was identified later as Nicole Robertson, herself a Native American.
The moment occurred during a press conference in North Dakota as Trump celebrated officially clinching the Republican Party’s nomination. One reporter asked him to respond to Warren’s recent criticism that Trump poses a grave threat to the United States.
“Who? Pocahontas?” Trump asked.
Though his crack was met with some laughter, some didn’t find it so funny.
“Is that offensive?” one woman in the crowd asked.
“Is it offensive?” Trump shot back. “You tell me.”
Robertson added in a shout, “That’s very offensive!”
“Oh, I’m sorry about that,” Trump responded.
He paused for a moment, and then went right back at it, asking, “Pocahontas? Is that what you said? Elizabeth Warren?”
Trump’s dig at Warren is a reference to reports from 2012 revealing she identified as a Native American when she applied in the 1990s for a teaching positioning at Harvard Law School. No matter how much she insists it’s the truth, there is absolutely nothing to back up her claim she is part Cherokee Indian, according to the Atlantic.
