High school cancels football game because of pro-Trump cheerleaders

A North Carolina high school canceled a football game after supporters of President Trump planned to attend and show their support for the cheerleaders who were punished for posing with a 2020 Trump sign.

Stanly County Schools announced Friday they were canceling their Sept. 20 football game after they were “notified of additional information that could compromise safety measures our schools have in place for sporting events,” according to the Washington Post.

Supporters of both Trump and the First Amendment were planning to attend the game in support of cheerleaders, who were placed on probation for publicly expressing support for the president. “It serves as a notice of behavior or action that is against NCHSAA Handbook Policy or contrary to expectations of sportsmanship and proper behavior that could bring additional sanctions, including penalties such as a fine or suspensions, should infractions persist,” said Marily Que Tucker, a spokesperson for the NCHSAA regarding their punishment.

Que Tucker added that the probation was a “warning” to the students who posed with the sign before an Aug. 30 football game. The school district said that because the cheerleaders were in their uniforms, they were representatives for the school when they posed in the picture.

The game was rescheduled, but the school has not elaborated what they meant that there was potential for compromised safety measures.
