Donald Trump’s presidential campaign is touting his child care policy in a new TV ad, released the same day a series of polls showed him losing support among white women in the key battleground state of Pennsylvania.
The 30-second spot, titled “Listening,” highlights a series of proposals Trump announced last month that aim to lower child care costs and make it easier for American families to save for their children’s education.
“Mr Trump is listening to the hard-working families who are struggling to pay for quality childcare, and that’s why Mr. Trump’s groundbreaking childcare affordability plan will provide immediate financial relief to parents and families,” said Trump’s deputy communications director, Jessica Ditto, in a statement accompanying the ad.
Trump’s plan, which he developed with his eldest daughter Ivanka, would allow individuals earning less than $250,000 a year and couples earning less than $500,000 to deduct childcare expenses from their annual income taxes. He has also proposed a child care rebate for low-income earners and guaranteed paid maternity leave up to six weeks.
The candidate’s latest push for women comes less than a week after he sent his campaign reeling by refusing to ignore a former Miss Universe contestant who had accused him of calling her “Miss Piggy” in the 1990s.
A Monmouth University poll released Tuesday showed Trump slipping further among white women in Pennsylvania, a state that has become crucial to his victory in November.
