The House Budget Committee on Monday called for a spending blueprint that balances the budget, an apparent criticism of President Trump’s fiscal 2019 spending plan, which was released the same day and doesn’t ever balance.
“Without question, the president’s budget acknowledges the grave financial state of our country,” said Budget Committee Chairman Steve Womack, R-Ark. “However, in order to slow down and pay down the nation’s unsustainable debt, balancing the budget should always be the goal. Doing so remains the goal of our committee.”
The Trump administration unveiled a budget plan that cuts domestic spending, but does not balance the budget within a decade, which misses a fiscal goal most conservatives are seeking.
The president’s plan calls for new spending on infrastructure and border security, and it adheres to an agreement to lift federal spending caps. Coupled with reduced revenue from the tax cut bill, the Trump administration plan fails to balance the budget within a decade.
The president’s budget proposal isn’t likely to be fully adopted by the GOP-led Congress, but lawmakers are likely to incorporate some of Trump’s proposals in their own spending plan.
Womack said the budget panel will hear about the president’s proposal from Trump’s Office of Management and Budget Committee Director Mick Mulvaney on Wednesday.
