Pat Toomey: GOP should run Luther Strange as write-in candidate in Alabama after Roy Moore allegations

Pennsylvania Republican Sen. Pat Toomey said his party should run a write-in candidate for Senate in Alabama after sexual assault allegations from a woman who said he groped her when she was 14.

Toomey said on NBC’s “Meet The Press” Sunday it’s best for Moore to step aside after the allegations surfaced, but if he doesn’t it’s time for the GOP to do something else. Moore’s primary opponent, current Sen. Luther Strange, should be that write-in candidate.

“You know, I think a write-in is something we should certainly explore. I think Luther Strange would be a strong candidate for a write-in. But a write-in is very difficult, let’s face it. There’s no easy solution to this. I think we should consider a write-in,” he said.

Toomey said the line from Republicans — that if the allegations against Moore are accurate, he should resign — are all they can say because it’s likely there will never be proof of those allegations.

Toomey said the time between when the incident is alleged to have occurred and when it came to light is an issue.

“It matters because it raises a question about the credibility,” he said. “Look, I’ve said, I don’t find the denial terribly credible. But when someone waits 40 years before they make an accusation — that raises a question itself. It’s probably not knowable. But there seems to be enough — enough there that it’s very disturbing.”
