Trump claims he turned down Person of the Year honor from Time magazine

President Trump claimed Friday evening he turned down an offer from Time magazine to be the outlet’s Person of the Year because they only said he’d “probably” win the award.

“Time Magazine called to say that I was PROBABLY going to be named ‘Man (Person) of the Year,’ like last year, but I would have to agree to an interview and a major photo shoot. I said probably is no good and took a pass. Thanks anyway!” Trump tweeted.

Trump was named the Person of the Year in 2016, and finished second to German Chancellor Angela Merkel in 2015 — a finish that bothered him throughout the following year.

Time began conducting a reader poll for its Person of the Year competition earlier this month, but editors from the magazine will ultimately choose the winner.

The announcement on who will be the Person of the Year will come on Dec. 6, according to the magazine.

Time said in a tweet later on Friday that Trump misrepresented the Person of the Year naming process.

“The President is incorrect about how we choose Person of the Year. TIME does not comment on our choice until publication, which is December 6,” the magazine stated in a tweet.
