MSNBC’s Joy Reid: Black voters will back Bloomberg ’if Biden goes down’

MSNBC correspondent Joy Reid believes former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg has the most to gain in the days and weeks following Tuesday’s New Hampshire primary.

“What I’m hearing from black voters consistently, if Biden goes down, they’re going to Bloomberg,” Reid told an MSNBC panel.

Reid said black voters dispassionately support Joe Biden because he “played second banana” to President Barack Obama but that voters would “dutifully” vote for whomever they believe can beat President Trump.

“African American voters trust Joe Biden because they’re like, ‘This guy from that generation’ was willing to be second banana to the first black president,” said Reid. “There is a trust and there is an affection for him, but the support is dispassionate. … It’s strategic, yeah. The only time I’ve ever seen black voters emotionally passionate about a candidate was Barack Obama. Other than that, they’re like, ‘Who do we have to vote for to get this Republican out? Give them to me.'”

Reid dismissed former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Amy Klobuchar as lacking “resonance” with black voters. Reid said Bloomberg has the most to gain if Biden, the former front-runner, continues sliding in the polls.

“The people coming out of New Hampshire. None of that — none of those people have resonance with black voters,” Reid said.
