An elderly woman was taken to a hospital in life-threatening condition after a fire in her apartment Wednesday night, according to Montgomery County fire and rescue officials.
Authorities said the blaze broke out in the apartment building on the 13500 block of Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring shortly after 11 p.m. Firefighters rescued the woman from her apartment.
The fire appears to have been caused by a burning cigarette in her bed, fire officials said.
The blaze was contained to the woman’s apartment. Other residents of the four-story building were evacuated, but able to return to their apartments after about an hour. No other injuries were reported.
