Private school says kindergartner can’t attend because of same-sex parents

A Louisiana private school won’t allow a student to attend this year after learning her parents are in a same-sex marriage.

Jennifer and Emily Parker said their daughter, Zoey, 5, was supposed to start kindergarten this past Monday at Bible Baptist Academy but were told by school administrators last week that their lifestyle choices did not align with the school’s values and beliefs.

“We got called into the principal’s office for a meeting,” Jennifer Parker told KPLC. “They informed us that Zoey wouldn’t be able to go to school there anymore because of our lifestyle choices.”

Jennifer Parker was told her 5-year-old niece, now adopted daughter, would not be allowed to attend Bible Baptist Academy for kindergarten after school administrators learned of Parker’s same-sex marriage.

The couple recently adopted Zoey, Jennifer’s niece, after her father was in a 2020 industrial accident.

“The pastor met us in the meeting room and started talking about gender identification and that they teach the words of the Lord and marriage was between a man and a woman,” Emily Parker said. “They didn’t think this was a good fit.”

Bible Baptist Academy issued a statement, saying that the school is “committed to instructing and living in accordance with the teachings of Scripture.”

“This should not be interpreted that we have any hatred or malice toward them,” the school’s statement also said. “We are just as committed to loving all people as we are to holding to Bible principles that people may not agree with or may not understand.”

The Parkers are choosing to call the situation “a blessing in disguise.”

“We have an opportunity to bring her to a school which is a little closer, and it’s a new opportunity for her to make new friends,” Jennifer Parker said.
