Biden dangles CDC guidance on going maskless outside as carrot for vaccine skeptics

President Joe Biden on Tuesday used new federal guidance clearing fully vaccinated people to go maskless outside as a carrot in his administration’s effort to convince jab skeptics to get their COVID-19 shots.

“For those who haven’t gotten their vaccination yet, especially if you’re younger or thinking you don’t need it, this is another great reason to go get vaccinated now — now,” said Biden, who wore a mask to his lectern on the White House’s North Lawn but not on the walk back inside.

He cast it as a way for vaccine skeptics, many Republicans and minorities, to achieve their stated goal: a return to normal life and a way to make face masks a thing of the past.

“Vaccines are about saving your life but also the lives of the people around you. They’re also about helping us get back to closer to normal in our living,” he said.

“If you’re vaccinated, you can do more things safely,” Biden added.

More than half of the adults in the United States have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

But nearly 40% of Republicans have told pollsters for months that they are unlikely to get vaccinated, a level high enough to drastically complicate Biden’s push to get to a level of herd immunity that will allow things such as mask mandates and business restrictions to be lifted.
