Climate change activists protested inside the Capitol Hill office of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell Wednesday to demand that he recognize the role of global warming and fossil fuels in the recent spate of hurricanes.
The activists were formed from Hurricane Harvey and Irma survivors, according to the environmental group 350.org that organized the demonstration.
Bill McKibben, the anti-fossil fuel group’s founder, posted photos of the demonstration on
Twitter.
The activists are demanding that McConnell, who hails from the coal state of Kentucky, “acknowledge the role of climate change and the fossil fuel economy in making these storms worse.”
The demonstration at his office was led by members of two state-based environmental groups, Texas Environmental Justice Advocacy Services and the New Florida Majority.
Florida and Texas are still recovering from the storms. Environmentalists have been staging protests this week at places in Washington where Trump administration officials are speaking.
Energy Secretary Rick Perry was heckled by activists at an oil policy meeting Monday.
On Tuesday, reporters and attendees at a National Clean Energy Week event were searched for protest signs and other paraphernalia before entering the event hall where Perry and Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke were to speak.
