Tokyo man in Joker-style suit stabs at least 15 train passengers, starts fire onboard

A costumed man stabbed at least 15 passengers aboard a Tokyo train Sunday evening after setting a fire and filling the car with smoke.

The attack took place aboard a Keio Line train near Kokuryo Station. The attacker was in his mid-20s and dressed in an outfit closely resembling the Joker, an iconic Batman villain. The attacker’s motives are currently unknown, according to NDTV.

“First I thought it was something like a Halloween event,” a witness told a Japanese outlet. “But I rushed away as a man carrying a long knife came in. I was very fortunate not to be injured.”

One passenger in his 60s was stabbed by the attacker and is suffering from serious injuries. The other passengers were able to escape by crawling out of the train windows.

Cellphone video filmed from outside the train appears to show the attacker smoking a cigarette and sitting down in the train car after the stabbings.

The man was captured without resisting arrest at the scene by authorities.

It is unclear how the attacker set a fire aboard the train, though reports claim he had spread a liquid around the train carriage.
