The National Enquirer is reportedly being sold for $100 million to the CEO of Hudson News, James Cohen.
The supermarket tabloid had come under fire for its alleged catch-and-kill tactics to contain negative stories about President Trump.
Hudson News is an airport travel retailer that has newsstands in airports across the country. The decision to sell the tabloid, according to the Washington Post, comes after hedge fund manager Anthony Melchiorre, whose firm controls American Media Inc., became “disillusioned” with the Enquirer’s reporting.
The Enquirer is overseen by David Pecker, a Trump confidant who has recently received negative media attention over the tabloid’s release of lurid text messages between Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and the woman he was having an affair with.
Bezos penned a lengthy post on the blog site Medium accusing Pecker of extortion, saying that Pecker threatened to release explicit photos of him, although Pecker has denied those claims.
