Va. prisons to allow legal handbook

A lawsuit settlement will allow inmates in Virginia prisons to obtain a previously banned legal handbook.

The Charlottesville Daily Progress reports that the state Department of Corrections will place up to five copies of the “Jailhouse Lawyer’s Handbook” in each prison library.

Officials banned the book, which explains how to file lawsuits, earlier this year.

Two non-profit groups sued in federal court, saying officials violated First Amendment and due process rights by preventing inmates from accessing the book. The suit was filed by the book’s publishers, the National Lawyers Guild and the Center for Constitutional Rights.
