Rep. Tom Perriello, D-Va., reported that his reelection campaign has $1.3 million cash on hand heading in to the final weeks of the election after having raised more than $810,000 between July and September. The campaign reported having more than 18,000 donors, with 90 percent of the third-quarter donations coming from individuals.
Perriello’s Republican opponent, state Sen. Robert Hurt, recently reported raising over $900,000 in the third quarter.
Both camps have attacked the sources of the other’s funding — a common refrain this election season.
“Powerful special interests like the health insurance companies and oil billionaires are working desperately to get Robert Hurt in Congress because they know he will be a rubberstamp for their agenda,” said Jessica Barba, spokeswoman for the Perriello campaign. “Our grassroots funding base is helping us fight back.”
Meanwhile, Hurt campaign manager Sean Harrison touted a “tremendous outpouring of support” from voters in Virginia’s 5th Congressional District.
“These contributions will help us combat the hundreds of thousands of dollars Congressman Perriello is receiving from national liberal groups like George Soros’ MoveOn.org and big labor bosses as we work to put an end to the job-killing, big spending Pelosi-Perriello agenda,” he said.
