Biden to tap Cindy McCain for coveted ambassador position

President Joe Biden will reportedly name Cindy McCain to an ambassador position in his administration.

McCain, the widow of the late Sen. John McCain, is currently undergoing a background check in anticipation of being named U.S. ambassador to the U.N. World Food Programme, a diplomatic mission based in Rome. The move to name a Republican ambassador comes after Biden did not pick a member of the opposing party to fill a position in his Cabinet, a practice Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama adhered to.

McCain broke with the GOP by endorsing Biden’s bid to defeat President Donald Trump, which may have helped Biden wrestle control of Arizona from Republican hands for the first time since Clinton won the state in 1996.

“My husband John lived by a code: country first. We are Republicans, yes, but Americans foremost. There’s only one candidate in this race who stands up for our values as a nation, and that is @JoeBiden,” McCain said last year.

“Joe and I don’t always agree on the issues, and I know he and John certainly had some passionate arguments, but he is a good and honest man,” she added. “He will lead us with dignity.”

Biden welcomed the news of McCain’s endorsement at the time, saying he was “honored” to have her “support and your friendship.”

“Cindy, I’m deeply honored to have your support and your friendship. This election is bigger than any one political party. It requires all of us to come together as one America to restore the soul of the nation,” Biden said. “Together, we’ll get it done.”

McCain has worked to curb world hunger and human trafficking in her role as chairwoman of the McCain Institute board of trustees, overseeing work in Southeast Asia and Africa.

The Biden administration is expected to name all of his ambassadors at the same time instead of making individual ambassador announcements.
