The liberal-leaning New York Daily News mocked President Trump on the cover of its Fourth of July paper, publishing a picture of him wearing a broken crown with his face made up like a clown.
“The clown who plays king can’t overthrow the bedrock values this nation was founded on 242 years ago today,” the cover of the paper stated.

The paper’s editorial said Trump “devotes this nation’s potent energies to barricading the borders, to separating refuge-seeking mothers from children, to ordering parents to leave the country with or without their kids now that a court has ordered their reunion.”
The Trump administration in April ordered that all illegal entrants, including first-time offenders traveling with children, be prosecuted. The move meant families were by law separated while adults navigated legal proceedings and children were taken into the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services.
The newspaper has been mockingly critical of Trump since he took office a year and a half ago and has used clown images before to characterize his leadership.
