Upon hearing the suggestions of a Russian lawmaker saying the country wanted Alaska back, Gov. Mike Dunleavy said Alaskans are armed and ready to defend the state.
The Republican governor responded to comments made by Oleg Matvaychev, a member of the Russian State Duma, while appearing on Russian state TV Sunday, saying, “Good luck with that.”
Matvaychev said the United States should “return all Russian properties, those of the Russian empire, the Soviet Union, and current Russia, which has been seized in the United States and so on,” while announcing retaliatory sanctions against top U.S. figures, including President Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, and Hunter Biden.
“Good luck with that! Not if we have something to say about it,” Dunleavy wrote on Twitter. “We have hundreds of thousands of armed Alaskans and military members that will see it differently.”

Social media has since widely mocked Matvaychev’s comments, which also included the suggestion that Russia should regain control of the Antarctic because, as he said, Russia “discovered it, so it belongs to us.”
One Twitter user laughed at the demand, writing: “So Russia wants us to GIVE back Alaska? HAHAHAHA”
Another called Russia’s bluff, saying it didn’t have enough money, referencing the ruble’s recent drop in value.
Russia sold Alaska for 7.2M USD. Your country doesn’t have that many rubles to buy it back

A tweet also implied that Russia is a bully, saying, “Alaska was bought from Russia. But then again Russia appears to take what it wants.”

Another Twitter user did not find the Russian demands quite as entertaining.
