NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) — The U.S. Army is honoring its best active duty and reserve drill sergeants.
The Army named Staff Sgt. Jeffrey Heilman as the 2012 active duty drill sergeant of the year and Staff Sgt. Jarod Moss as the 2012 Army Reserve drill sergeant of the year. The awards were announced Friday at a ceremony at Fort Eustis.
Heilman represented Fort Jackson, S.C., and Moss represented the 95th Reserve Division.
They were chosen after a competition that tested their knowledge of Army training and their ability to teach new soldiers.
Heilman received the Stephen Ailes Award, named for the secretary of the Army from 1964 to 1965. Moss received the Ralph Hines Jr. Award, named for the former commander of Continental Army Command, now known as U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command.
