Rep. Ted Lieu shared what he described as “more evidence” that President Trump was “derelict in his duty” to take preemptive action to protect the 3.5 million residents of Puerto Rico as Hurricane Maria barreled down on the island last week.
The Democrat from California retweeted a tweet late Friday from NBC-6 Miami chief meteorologist John Morales, which shows that the National Hurricane Center predicted that Maria would make landfall over Puerto Rico four days before it actually did so on Sept. 20.
“Starting 4 days prior to landfall NHC wrote 17 full Hurricane Maria advisories. Every single one called for landfall in Puerto Rico. 16 of those forecasts called for Maria to hit as a major hurricane,” Morales, whose bio says he was raised in Puerto Rico, said. “Remarkable work by NHC. Impact should’ve been no surprise to anyone, *anywhere*,” he added.

Maria was indeed a “major” hurricane when it hit the island as a Category 4 storm, causing power outages across the islands and has been tied to at least 16 deaths.
Democrats and other critics of the president have complained that Trump was delayed in his response to the storm, which also hit the U.S. Virgin Islands. Meanwhile, the Federal Emergency Management Agency says it’s National Response Coordination Center was “fully activated” days before Maria made landfall over Puerto Rico, and thousands of troops and National Guardsmen were on the ground before the storm hit the island last week.
However, Puerto Ricans are still dealing with difficult conditions as food, water, and fuel have been hard to come by.
Lieu, who constantly trolls Trump on Twitter, proposed that the president might have been more absorbed in condemning NFL players who kneel during the national anthem than managing a natural disaster response.
“He was more interested in bashing the NFL,” Lieu said in his tweet.
More evidence @realDonaldTrump was derelict in his duty to protect US citizens in Puerto Rico. He was more interested in bashing the NFL. https://t.co/ycazIwzVda

Trump, who is at his New Jersey golf club this weekend, has defended his efforts and clashed with the mayor of San Juan after she repeatedly begged for more help.
