Schumer transferring $15 million to boost Senate candidates ahead of midterm elections

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is about to transfer a whopping $15 million from his political action committee to candidates and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee as the party fights to retain its Senate majority in November.

The transfer from the Friends of Schumer PAC, reported by Axios on Tuesday, includes $5 million to the head of the Senate Democrats’ campaign arm, Sen. Gary Peters (D-MI), to allocate as he sees necessary: $1 million to each of the victory funds for front-line Sens. Raphael Warnock (D-GA), Mark Kelly (D-AZ), Catherine Cortez-Masto (D-NV), and Maggie Hassan (D-NH); $1 million to boost Democratic candidates in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Florida, Ohio, and North Carolina; and an additional $500,000 for both Sens. Michael Bennet (D-CO) and Patty Murray (D-WA), whose seats are at risk.

The move comes as Democrats express optimism about their odds of keeping the Senate, with candidates in key swing states leading in their races despite political strategists previously noting that, historically, the party that holds the majority in both chambers and the White House tends to lose seats in the midterm elections.

The DSCC now has a cash advantage over the National Republican Senatorial Committee: Second-quarter reports show the organization with $53.5 million, to the NRSC’s $28.5 million.

While some Republicans have sounded the alarm on the levels of cash available in the final stretch of the election season, NRSC Chairman Rick Scott (R-FL) has stood by his strategy, arguing that spending early was needed to boost candidates following heated primaries.
