President Trump declared that he’ll accept the Republican presidential nomination at one of two locations.
The president said his options are Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, the location of a bloody Civil War battle and President Abraham Lincoln’s famous address that followed, or the White House.
“We have narrowed the Presidential Nomination Acceptance Speech, to be delivered on the final night of the Convention (Thursday), to two locations — The Great Battlefield of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, and the White House, Washington, D.C. We will announce the decision soon!” the president shared on social media Monday.
Hundreds of Republican delegates are planning to gather for meetings on Aug. 24 in Charlotte, North Carolina, to nominate Trump for president. The event will be followed by three days of speeches and programming at sites not yet determined. Trump’s acceptance speech is set to take place on Thursday, Aug 27.
Following multiple disruptions to convention plans due to the coronavirus, Trump floated the Rose Garden as a venue, which critics said would not only be improper, but they also warned it would put White House officials at risk of violating the Hatch Act, which prohibits federal employees from engaging in political activity while on duty.
Former Vice President Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic nominee, will likely deliver his acceptance speech in his home state of Delaware as he is not expected to attend his party’s convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
