Police chase turns into SWAT situation

A routine traffic stop Sunday afternoon turned into an hours-long standoff with the United States Park Police at a home on the unit block of Gallatin Avenue near North Capitol Street in Washington, D.C.

Police pulled over a vehicle at about 1:45 p.m. but the car took off as it was approached by an officer. A police chase ensued that resulted in a collision between the suspects’ vehicle and a police car. A male suspect then left the vehicle and ran into a home on Gallatin Avenue. It was unclear whether he was a resident of the house or knew the inhabitants, park police spokesman Sgt. David Schlosser said. Two officers were treated for minor injuries, one in the crash and another after attempting to capture the suspect after he exited his vehicle.

In addition to the suspect, five males and six children were inside the home but did not appear to be in danger. Multiple streets surrounding the house were closed as SWAT units and negotiators were deployed. At about 6:30 p.m., negotiators were able to convince the suspect and the other occupants to leave the home safely.

The suspect was not immediately charged with a crime but was in the custody of investigators
