Michael Bloomberg eyes 2020 run

Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg is reportedly considering a run for president in 2020.

Sources close to the billionaire told CBS New York the move is driven in part by the regret he has for not running against President Trump in 2016.

Bloomberg previously considered a run in 2008, 2012, and 2016, yet the same sources say he thought he could have won outright against Trump or at least prevented him from winning.

“I thought long and hard about running. If you have three credible candidates, nobody is going to get 50 percent … and if no one gets 50 percent it goes to the House of Representatives to pick a president,” he said in a 2017 interview. “In my case, the House would have picked Donald Trump, and my obit would have been about only one thing: he’s the guy that gave us Donald Trump.”

Bloomberg, who estimated to be worth over $50 billion, has already pledged $80 million of his personal fortune to Democrats for the 2018 midterm congressional elections.

For years now the former three-term mayor has shifted between parties, but says he is now committed to helping the Democrats win a majority in Congress, suggesting that if he does run it will be either as an independent or under the Democratic ticket.

Bloomberg is anti-abortion, opposes the death penalty, and co-authored a book on climate change titled, Climate of Hope: How Cities, Businesses and Citizens Can Save the Planet.

Furthermore, Bloomberg is the co-founder of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, which later merged with Moms Demand Action For Gun Sense in America to form Everytown for Gun Safety, which collaborated in 2018 to organize the March For Our Lives.
