Send in the clown: Ex-Ringling Bros. performer to run for Congress

A professional clown has thrown his hat into the ring for the congressional seat representing South Carolina’s 5th Congressional District.

Steve Lough, a professional clown, wants to bring his talents to Capitol Hill and announced he is running in the Democratic primary for the seat held by Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C.

A native of Camden, S.C., Lough graduated first from Dartmouth College and then from Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Clown College.

Lough worked as a professional clown for 30 years, which includes stints with Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus and Japan’s Kinoshita Circus. He’s also volunteered with Barack Obama’s and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., presidential campaigns.

But now, Lough wants to reform the nation’s gun laws and fight for universal healthcare.

Lough isn’t shy about his years in the clown business. His campaign website, clownforcongress.com, features photos of him in his clown costume and makeup. His slogan is “Aim high! Vote Lough!”
