Just before Steve Herrara, guitarist for Fools & Horses, joined his bandmates in the recording studio earlier this week, he talked a bit about the band?s new music.
The producer the five-member rock band has partnered with is bringing a new cohesiveness, and a bit more rock, to the group?s sound. Herrara and his bandmates are banking this is just what they need to break them out of the pack.
“Overall, this is more of a solid rock album,” said Herrara of the 12-tune disc slated for release this summer. “Our guitar-driven melodies aredefinitely still there, but the sound is much more cohesive. …The fresh ear of our producer really makes it a whole new ballgame, changes everything around.”
Fools & Horses has won plenty of kudos for its signature sound, most notably from Starbucks Entertainment Partner Music Co., which chose the band?s song “The Therapy” for inclusion on a 2007 release. The band has become something of a staple on the local music scene.
“They consistently bring out enthusiastic fans,” said Baltimore promoter Tim Walther. “[They] will potentially be the next band to break out of Baltimore.”
But while Starbucks and others have expressed interest in the band, the members are still going it as independents as they hustle for the big break. Recent gigs at SXSW, the major music extravaganza in Austin, and throughout that area helped spread word of the band. Now the members hope the album reinforces the musical message.
“That?s really why we want to get this new album out,” said Herrara. “We want to have something else [to send to record companies and promoters]. We just want people to hear our music.”
This weekend, Fools & Horses plays the Recher, on the ticket with two other bands. Even though it recently played the Towson area, the multiple bookings are all part of the grassroots effort to build and keep a fan base. Herrara promises the band won?t disappoint.
“We did debut some of our new music at the Recher recently,” said Herrara. “If people come out, they should get ready ? there may be more.”
