Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders defended the winter outfit he wore to President Biden’s inauguration on Wednesday after Twitter users poked fun at him.
The former Democratic presidential candidate, who sported wool mittens to the Capitol event, appeared on social media in multiple photographs, drawing jokes and playful criticism as Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris took their oaths of office at about noon.
“In Vermont, we know something about the cold, and we’re not so concerned about good fashion,” Sanders said in an interview with CBS News’s Gayle King following the inauguration. “We want to keep warm. And that’s what I did today.”
