Democrats might have had more success in 2016 with Oprah Winfrey at the top of their ticket, according to progressive filmmaker Michael Moore.
After Hillary Clinton lost the presidential election to Donald Trump this week, Moore said Sunday that Republicans often have people on their ticket who are widely loved by the American people, including Ronald Reagan and “the Terminator,” former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
“Frankly, Democrats would have been better off if we ran Oprah or Tom Hanks. Why don’t we run beloved people?” Moore said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
Moore also called for a “clean sweep” of the Democratic party to make way for more progressive voices that appeal to the younger generation.
One name he said embodies that change: Rep. Keith Ellison, D-Minn., and the first Muslim elected to Congress.
“That is the exact way to go. That is the future,” Moore said.
