Trump signals US close to trade deal with Mexico

President Trump tweeted news of a potential trade deal with Mexico on Saturday, saying the two nations were “getting closer by the hour.”

“Some really good people within both the new and old government, and all working closely together….A big Trade Agreement with Mexico could be happening soon!” the president said on Twitter.

Both White House and Mexico officials have signaled this week the two nations are close to a deal on the North American Free Trade Agreement, though the agreement’s third partner Canada has not been involved in talks between U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and his Mexican counterpart, Economic Minister Ildefonso Guajardo.

Incoming Mexican officials said Wednesday that a rumored deal would not be announced this week.

Trump also expressed positive sentiments about working with the administrations of outgoing President Enrique Pena Nieto, who leaves office on Dec. 1, and President-elect Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. The two former rivals have agreed to cooperate during the transition.
