Kenneth C. Mays earns a living spreading the word.
“Communicating with the client is really important,” said the president and creative director of Mays and Associates, “both how well we communicate with clients and how well we can help them communicate with their customers.”
Mays and Associates is a full-service marketing and communications firm in Howard County. The company was founded in the basement of Mays? town house in 1987.
Unlike most boutique ad agencies, the firm doesn?t specialize in one industry.
“It?s always fun for us to learn new technologies and business,” Mays said. “We don?t do the same thing every day.”
The six-employee team may be small, but they have the talent to make up for lack of numbers, Mays says. “It?s not about size, it?s about skill set,” he said. “I don?t know if we?d want to be a business of 25 or 50, because it?s more fun being a small team.”
The firm currently has about 20 active clients. “We do everything from design and print ads to corporate brochures and branding,” Mays said. “We?re very good partners. We keep our egos in our back pocket. The fun is coming in and watching something being created.”
Mays and Associates has been the agency of record for The Young School in Columbia for the past 15 years. “Because it?s a small company, over the years we?ve built up a friendship,” said school founder Josh Young. “[Mays] is the only one who actually tried to learn my business so he could do a good job. He took the extra steps to give personal service and over the years we have grown together.”
