2ND SENTENCE TRY FOR MAN WHO HIJACKED JET TO CUBA

A Miami federal judge will try a second time to sentence an American who returned from Cuba decades after hijacking a jetliner to the communist island. William Potts Jr. was supposed be sentenced last week for the 1984 hijacking of the jet on its way from New York to Miami, but a last-minute snag emerged over classified documents. Another hearing is set Thursday.

2 GIRLS INVESTIGATED FOR TORTURING RARE TORTOISE

State wildlife officials are investigating two North Florida girls after a video posted online showed them lighting a threatened gopher tortoise on fire and stomping it to death. Videos posted on the Facebook page of the Nevada Voters of Animals showed the Orange Park girls dousing the tortoise with a flammable fluid and laughing as the creature tries to get away from the flames. A second video shows one of the girls stomping on the animal until its shell breaks and its dead.

TEENS TRY TO BREAK INTO CAR WITH DETECTIVE INSIDE

Three teens were charged with attempted burglary after authorities say they tried to open the door of a parked car while an undercover St. Petersburg police detective sat inside. The detective was watching an area because officers received reports that teens were trying to open parked car doors. The detective watched the teens try other doors. Apparently unaware he was inside, the teens tried the detective’s door last.

MAN DEAD FOLLOWING HOUSE FIRE

Officials say a man is dead following a north Florida house fire. Marion County Fire Rescue reports that firefighters responded to the Citra home Wednesday afternoon. The 40-year-old man was found unresponsive inside. Rescue workers took the man to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

18 FLORIDA VETERANS RECEIVE FRANCE’S HIGHEST HONOR

Eighteen World War II veterans are being honored in South Florida. The French Consul General is bestowing the Legion of Honor award to the men in a ceremony Thursday at the Boynton Beach Civic Center. The French government has been honoring veterans across the U.S. in recent years to honor their contributions to gaining peace in Europe.
