Hillary Clinton’s advantage on Donald Trump in Virginia has narrowed to 5 percentage points, 44-39, among likely voters in a new poll.
The Winthrop University poll of Virginia found 5 percent of respondents favored Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson while the Green Party’s Jill Stein and independent candidate Evan McMullin each garnered 2 percent of likely voters.
“With several negative ‘October surprises’ coming out and affecting both candidates, we have seen a tightening of the race in national polls,” said Scott Huffmon, Winthrop University poll director, in a statement. “However, while Clinton’s lead in Virginia has shrunk from its highest point, she still leads Donald Trump in the Commonwealth.”
Clinton’s 5-percentage-point advantage in the Winthrop poll is consistent with RealClearPolitics’ average of Virginia polling that shows the Democratic nominee leading by the same margin. The average includes Winthrop’s poll.
The Winthrop University poll surveyed 712 likely voters by cellphones and landline telephones from Oct. 23-30. The poll has a 3.6 percentage point margin of error.
